چکیده

We present a new experimental investigation of the NMR free induction decay (FID) in a lattice of spin-1/2 nuclei in a strong Zeeman field. Following a π/2 pulse, evolution under the secular dipolar Hamiltonian preserves coherence number in the Zeeman eigenbasis, but changes the number of correlated spins in the state. The observed signal is seen to decay as single-spin, single-quantum coherences evolve into multiple-spin coherences under the action of the dipolar Hamiltonian. In order to probe the multiple-spin dynamics during the FID, we measured the growth of coherence orders in a basis other than the usual Zeeman eigenbasis. This measurement provides the first direct experimental observation of the growth of coherent multiple-spin correlations during the FID. Experiments were performed with a cubic lattice of spins (F in calcium fluoride) and a linear spin chain (F in fluorapatite). It is seen that the geometrical arrangement of the spins plays a significant role in the development of higher order correlations. The results are discussed in light of existing theoretical models.

Exploring large coherent spin systems with solid state NMR

Solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) allows us to explore a large coherent spin system and provides an ideal test-bed for studying strongly interacting multiplespin system in a large Hilbert space. In this thesis, we experimentally investigate the spin dynamics in a rigid lattice of dipolarly coupled nuclear spins using multiple quantum NMR spectroscopy. Encoding multiple quantum cohere...

Multiple-quantum dynamics in solid state NMR

Recently developed solid state multiple-quantum NMR methods are applied to extended coupling networks, where direct dipole-dipole interactions can be used to create coherences of very high order ( 1(0). The progressive development of multiple-quantum coherence over time depends upon the formation of multiple-spin correlations, a phenomenon which also accompanies the normal decay to equilibrium ...

Longer-range distances by spinning-angle-encoding solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

A new spinning-angle-encoding spin-echo solid-state NMR approach is used to accurately determine the dipolar coupling corresponding to a C-C distance over 4 Å in a fully labelled dipeptide. The dipolar coupling dependent spin-echo modulation was recorded off magic angle, switching back to the magic angle for the acquisition of the free-induction decay, so as to obtain optimum sensitivity. The r...

Decay of spin coherences in one-dimensional spin systems

Strategies to protect multi-qubit states against decoherence are difficult to formulate because of their complex many-body dynamics. A better knowledge of the decay dynamics would help in the construction of dynamical decoupling control schemes. Here we use solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to experimentally investigate decay of coherent multi-spin states in linear spin chains. ...

Multispin correlations and pseudo-thermalization of the transient density matrix in solid-state NMR: free induction decay and magic echo.

Quantum unitary evolution typically leads to thermalization of generic interacting many-body systems. There are very few known general methods for reversing this process, and we focus on the magic echo, a radio-frequency pulse sequence known to approximately "rewind" the time evolution of dipolar coupled homonuclear spin systems in a large magnetic field. By combining analytic, numerical, and e...
